To make it easier for readers to find the answers to the [i:8b77ae4c82]Questions For Thunt[/i:8b77ae4c82] thread, I've created this locked thread. I'll be posting all answers here. This way no one needs to go looking for them.

[quote:509b8c88ed="Anonymous"]Why don't you start hosting goblins yourself so you (instead of comicgen) can make some money off of the page hits you get?[/quote:509b8c88ed]

The only way for that to work, would be if I were to make each update one page. I could still post a three page update, but you'd have to click "next" after each and every page throughout the comic. There would also be a slew of flashing/animated ads throughout the page and this would make reading the comic kind of annoying I think.

[quote:509b8c88ed="hemi"]im hoping im asking in the right place here... i would like to donate to the Tempts Fate fund but i have no pay pal account and am paranoid about using my credit card number over the internet. Thunt do you have an address or mailbox that i could simply write ya a note with a 10 dollar bill in it?
i looked around the site and didnt see one i have used the snail mail to donate to my other most favorite comic WTF comics he has an address right on the first page ya see at the site if you do have an address ya might want to make it more visible? anyways sorry to take ya away from drawing but ill keep watch for your reply. thanks again for sharing your great comic genius with us....[/quote:509b8c88ed]

Thekender and I have talked a bit about getting a mailbox and we both think that it might be a good idea. As soon as we get one, we'll post it's address. I'd post my actual living address, but then readers would come over to my apartment and we'd have to have a swimming party, complete with BBQ. Oh wait, that sounds like fun. Oh, and thank you for the support, BTW!

[quote:509b8c88ed="Chaszmyr"]Do you do commissioned art?[/quote:509b8c88ed]

Yes and no. I've done a couple pieces for people over the last year, but with my schedule, it can take me awhile to finish it. Plus, I have to make the extra work worth my while by charging $60 for a fairly simple drawing and more for something more elabrate. Unless it's specifially the [i:509b8c88ed]Thunt[/i:509b8c88ed] name you're looking for, I'd recommend going with another artist, since there are far more talented people out there that can offer you faster work at lower prices.

Talented, starving artists are everywhere! Everyone give them your money!

[quote:509b8c88ed="Likes-to-scrath-himself"]2 questions:

1. When you DM whats your favorite kind of villian to have your PC's fight? (The cunning recurring one, the bloodthirsty one or something completely diffrent?)[/quote:509b8c88ed]

I love creating re-occurring villains! However, since I hate railroading my players and I never stop what is happening in the game (even if it sucks for me and messes up my whole plan) I keep losing my villains. More than once, I'd have my villain about to escape out of some hatch or tunnel or teleport spell because he's getting his butt kicked and just as he's shaking his fist and swearing that he'll be back to destroy everyone, some elf with a held action gets him between the eyes with an arrow.

I also like antagonists that aren't [i:509b8c88ed]really[/i:509b8c88ed] villains. I once had a suicidal bard who was always trying to kill himself because he was so bad at playing his lute and the whole town hated him. He was annoying and all the players wanted him to just die. But the adventure called for him to remain alive for a period of time, so the players had to constantly stop him from trying to kill himself. It was a neat twist and we had a lot of fun.

I also love genius villains. Oh, but I can't resist the dumb villains too. Dammit, I love them all.

[quote:509b8c88ed="Likes-to-scrath-himself"]2. Which goblins is your favorite?[/quote:509b8c88ed]

2. All of them. Every member of the GAP is a part of my own personality, with Complains being the most like me, I think. I'm one of those sci/fi fantasy geeks that'll point at the TV and say "Aw, that is so lame! Cloaking devices don't work that way!". Complains is very much that kind of goblin. His job is to point out things in my own comic that he thinks are lame, like Minmax's dodgey character background.

Big Ears is the kind personality that I like to think I am if I were thrust into a tough situation. Actually, I think that most of us hope that we're that kind of personality if pressed into a dangerous corner. We hope that we're the kind of person that'd rush into a burning building to save the screaming child on the second floor.

Chief represents that memory we all have from childhood when we wish that we'd been braver. Remember that memory? The one that you wish you could go back in time and redo? Stand up to that bully or face whatever scary thing you couldn't face at that time? Chief is like that. He's just not the kind of goblin that was meant to face the kinds of dangers that a chief has to face.

Thaco is my own determination to be awesome despite personal flaws. He's old, he's grumpy, he doesn't always work well with others, he's missing a freakin ear and he has a pot belly. But he still kicks ass. I may not have a pot belly (yet), but I'm getting older at a faster and faster rate and I can sometimes be pretty grumpy. Thaco is just me telling myself that I'll still be cool and kicking ass when I'm older.

Fumbles sees everything as a game and has a hard time taking things seriously until it's too late. He's the kind of guy you'd want to party with, but not the kind of guy that you'd want to have babysitting your kids. The Fumbes within me shines through when I get the urge to feed my kids Pop Tart sandwiches for lunch because... damn, Pop Tart sandwiches! How cool is that? Or when I want to suddenly tell my kids to put their shoes on when they're in the middle of getting ready for bed because I want to surprise them with a sudden trip to go get ice cream because that would have been a dream come true for me as a kid! Luckily, TheKender is there to remind me how dumb these ideas can be.

Okay, so that answer went a little crazy, but yes, I like all of them.

[quote:509b8c88ed="Xeno_Mezphy"]Are the goblins ever going to come out of the forest onto a two lane road, and get hit by a truck? [/quote:509b8c88ed]

Um... doubtful. But if that did happen, it'd be driven by Minmax with Forgath following him in a Hummer. The ultimate dwarven vehicle.

[quote:509b8c88ed="TinSoldier"]From scripting to drawing to coloring to finished comic, about how many hours per day do you spend making Goblins?[/quote:509b8c88ed]

It depends on the page. I think my record is 8 hours, but that was a very simple page. Usually, if I start working on a page as soon as I wake up, I can finish it very late that night. But that's when I have the whole day to do nothing but work on the comic. Sometimes the pages can take longer than a day.

[quote:0cad97d008="Strapper"]Are you ever going to give us the campiegn setting so we can like, play this with our friends?[/quote:0cad97d008]

TheKender and I have been talking about this for awhile. It's definately something that I'd like to do.

I'd love to include dungeon crawls that are planned to be explored by characters in the future. The reason that I'd have to include [b:0cad97d008]future[/b:0cad97d008] dungeon crawls instead of dungeon crawls that have already been trekked, is because a DMs players have probably read the Goblins comic as well and they'd know what's behind that dangerous looking door. Plus, reading the comic would be fun I think, because you could be thinking "Oh, Complains is reaching that hallway that killed my elven rogue. I wonder how [b:0cad97d008]he'll[/b:0cad97d008] do". That's just one idea though.

I've got tons of notes on Thuntonian wildlife, Brassmoon City, the rules for how clans of various races work, etc. Oh, and of course, it'd include character sheets for the main characters so you could have them in your game. I'd love to put this together soon. I just need the time...

[quote:0cad97d008="LoneStarNorth"]How did you originally expect your comic would be doing after a year?[/quote:0cad97d008]

I really had no idea. I was told by other webcomic authors that it'd take many years to get to the point where I am now, so I consider myself extremely lucky.

I remember at the very beginning, when I'd get roughly 5 to 10 unique visitors per day and I'd think "hey cool, someone is reading my comic". That was enough of a rush for me to keep drawing. The 5,000 to 11,000 unique visitors per day that I get now just blows my mind. I get nervous if I think about it too deeply. Yes, I actually get stage fright while drawing.

[quote:0cad97d008="LoneStarNorth"]Looking back now on Goblins #1, what is the first thought that comes to mind?[/quote:0cad97d008]

Hands. Good lord, I hated drawing hands. I always drew my cartoon characters with huge mittens and I'd try to convince myself that it was merely my style. But let's face facts. I couldn't draw hands.

My idea for the look of the comic was a lot more cartoony back then. And there are some pictures in the early ones that I really dislike now. But I guess that's a good thing. If I ever look back on past drawings and say "wow, I was good back then. It's too bad that I can't draw like that now", then I'm in real trouble.

[quote:0cad97d008="LoneStarNorth"]How do you feel Book Two is doing compared to Book One?[/quote:0cad97d008]

I'm actually really happy to be doing Book 2 now. The first book was really a very simple storyline when you think about it. Goblins fight some adventurers. The end. But now that I've done that book and have already introduced the main characters, etc, I can work on more complex storylines and draw jokes that are about more than introducing character personalities. I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to the big climax of this book much more than I was for the first book.

[quote:0cad97d008="Newb"]I hope this does not come off as a spoiler as it was already shown in the preview... Anyway, Thunt, what's up with Forgath (or Forgarth)'s antlers? I can see why you wanted to give him huge eyes - after all, that's standard cuteness sympathy procedure - but how would this strange antler helmet foreshadow anything about him changing his mind about goblins (I hope)?
That's been bugging me since I first read it. Don't answer if this is a spoiler, though I don't see how it could be.[/quote:0cad97d008]

At the time that I was sketching Forgath with those antlers, I hadn't written the story about his helmet yet. I knew he'd be going "goblin friendly" eventually, but I wasn't sure how or when. The antlers really weren't going to be foreshadowing anything. I originally wanted to draw a dwarf who looked different than the standard, armoured dwarf we always see. I decided instead to have him looking like the standard dwarf, but not acting like the standard dwarf.

[quote:0cad97d008="runs-with-scissors"]Did you ever go to an art school or was it just practice? Also id like to submitfanart but i dont have a scanner so when do you think you could post an address?[/quote:0cad97d008]

No, I've never gone to art school aside from what I took in highschool.

I'm not sure when I'll get that PO box, but it shouldn't be too long.

[quote:0cad97d008="kicka_2"]you said that there wouyld be a bunch of flashing ads, but if u signed uop for google adsense, everytime someone clicked on one u would get pated[/quote:0cad97d008]

True, but I'd have to leave Comicgen, and start paying for my own bandwidth. Since my comic pages are so big, that'd cost me too much money to be worth it.

[quote:0cad97d008="winged"]do you ever intend to charictor sheets for the goblins cast, and if so when?[/quote:0cad97d008]

Definately. As for when... I'm not sure yet.

[quote:0cad97d008="CloisteredCleric"]You mentioned that your dad was an artist. Is there anywhere we could see his work?[/quote:0cad97d008]

Um... If you can find his work, I'd love to see it. I've heard that he's done some work for some huge companies and for some textbooks for schools. I also hear about art shows to showcase his work every now and then. But despite all of this, I can't seem to find any evidence of him online. He's not really comfortable being a Dad and the last time I saw him, I think I was 3. I tracked him down when I was 18 and I called him. That kind of bothered him and after making a few calls to him, he never called me back. Years ago, I went to the [i:0cad97d008]Vancouver Art Gallery[/i:0cad97d008] to see if they had anything on him. They actually have a file on him in their library. It listed all sorts of facts about him and in reading that file, I saw more of his artwork and learned more about him than I ever knew before.

On the page that listed his name, age, schools and family he has, I took out a pen and wrote [i:0cad97d008]Son: Tarol Hunt[/i:0cad97d008] when no one was looking, heh heh. As far as I know, that file is still there and lists me as his son.

Every now and then, I wonder if he'll ever hear about Goblins and what he'd think of me using his art signature "Thunt" in the ways that I have.

Oh, and in case anyone's ever heard of him, his name is [i:0cad97d008]Thomas Elliot Hunt[/i:0cad97d008]. And for anyone who finds a weird urge to look him up online, he's NOT the Thomas Hunt who does native american artwork.

[quote:0cad97d008="Velead"]So wait, you're Thunt Jr.? Or Thunt II?[/quote:0cad97d008]

I'm just this guy....

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="Head-in-the-clouds"]Do you know the work of George R. R. Martin? Especially [i:4e0b41d7d6]A Song of Ice and Fire[/i:4e0b41d7d6]? I think he shares some stylistic devices with you in creating deep and believable characters, thinking a lot about the world in that his story takes place and mercilessly killing off likeable characters to maintain a certain insecureness in the reader, concerning the fate of their beloved characters and thereby enhances the tension of the story.
If you don`t know [i:4e0b41d7d6]A Song of Ice and Fire[/i:4e0b41d7d6] you should take a look into it, I think you would like.[/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

I'm not familiar with him, but when I mentioned him to TheKender, she got all excited. She likes his work and has a bunch of his books. I asked if his writing style was similar to mine and after thinking about it for a bit, she said that it was.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="Likes-to-scrath-himself"]have you considered maybe switching to a 3 times a month update and a fan week every month?[/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

As cool as it was to see all the guest work on [i:4e0b41d7d6]Goblins[/i:4e0b41d7d6], I've been going through withdrawal over here. Other webcomic artists claim that they don't care if people read their work or not, but I've often said that I'm not one of those people. I thrive on others reading my work. I admit it! So no, I don't think I could survive posting only three comics per week.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="Says-Nonsence"]how did fumbles ever reach maturity?[/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

Blind, dumb luck.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="tomaO2"]1. [b:4e0b41d7d6]Why did the Orcs retreat when they hadn't taken big Ears yet? [/b:4e0b41d7d6]Ears is not the best fighter of the group, after all. A final attack would have captured him too.[/color:4e0b41d7d6][/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

Each goblin was attacked by various [i:4e0b41d7d6]bunches[/i:4e0b41d7d6] of orcs. The last of the other orcs started heading back to the cave while Ears was still battling his bunch. The orcs assumed that it wouldn't be long before they could overcome the little, yellow guy and be right behind the caravan back to the cave. As it turns out, Ears wiped out his bunch and then noticed that everyone else was gone.

He's not the best fighter, it's true. But sometimes the unlikely ones are the last ones standing.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="tomaO2"]2.[b:4e0b41d7d6] Ears watched as Complains leaped out of nowhere to slaughter those four orcs and was then promply captured. How did Ears not notice this happening?[/b:4e0b41d7d6] I understand that he had to kill another Orc right after Complains showed up and turned his head but it seem to me that it happened so fast that Ears would be staring open mouthed, see Complains get captured but get distracted by yet another zombie that attacked before being to reach him.[/color:4e0b41d7d6][/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

I would have loved to show that kind of reaction from Ears, but what you just described is another one or two full pages. I'm always struggling with how much I should cover. Covering more detail makes the comic look better, but can slow down the pace to a painful crawl. If I put all the detail I ever wanted into every update, we might still be at the [i:4e0b41d7d6]Warcamp Battle[/i:4e0b41d7d6]!

No, I left it for the reader to assume that Ears was too busy fighting other orcs to notice anymore than a quick glimpse of Complains gettin' his rage on with those four orcs.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="tomaO2"]-Also I posted about 2 websites that I saw reviews about Goblins on. I noticed that you commented about one of them but not about the other and you never made a post about it in the thread I made about it. So did you notice this review of goblins?

[b:4e0b41d7d6]-The Webcomic View #5 - April 18, 2006 [/b:4e0b41d7d6]
It's a podcast. so you have to download the audio to hear the full review. Here is the Summery.[/color:4e0b41d7d6][/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

Yup, I noticed it. Although I certainly don't mind getting reviews or comments about the comic that are less than shining, I just kind of felt that he should have done a bit more research on the comic before he reviewed it. He gave me poor marks for things that I think are stronger points in the comic and high marks for things that I think still need a great deal of improvement.

Let's just say that I disagree with a lot of his review. And before anyone has a chance to think that I'm only saying that because he didn't give me a 10 out of 10, I've seen much more biting reviews/discussions about [i:4e0b41d7d6]Goblins[/i:4e0b41d7d6] that I've agreed with completely.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="Says-Nonsence"]And how asks-nonsence manage to stay in the warcamp?[/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

RAFO why there were elders in the warcamp.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="Says-Nonsence"]What does Taps do to pass his time. He just stood there when we first met him. And how did Taps manage to gather blackroot?[/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

Ever see those old guys that can spend an entire day on some porch, sitting in rocking chairs and talking about crap? Me either. But I'm sure they're out there. All the elders would talk and hang out and... oh yeah, RAFO.

I got a bunch of emails about Taps collecting blackroot when that update came out and I still seem to get one every few weeks or so. I think if I'd had Taps saying [i:4e0b41d7d6]"Hey Asks, I can't collect blackroot because I'm blind! Can you do it for me?" [/i:4e0b41d7d6]I'd have gotten emails from people saying that their blind friend can take apart a car and put it back together in under three minutes.

I'm not blind and I don't know anyone who's blind, but I don't think it's unreasonable for a blind person to find something tasty in the woods where he lives. But I'm certainly no expert on this subject.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="Dodgedude"]heres a question any self respecting DnD freak should ask, if you were thrown into the dnd universe let say your own what class would you have at the start or would you take on?[/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

Rogue. There's something too cool about that class.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="Chaszmyr"]I would like to be able to do it that way myself [i:4e0b41d7d6](refering to the once-a-week updates of multiple pages)[/i:4e0b41d7d6] when I begin a webcomic. Would you have any objection to our adopting that method of update?[/quote:4e0b41d7d6]

Of course not. Firstly, I can't really say that updating that way is [b:4e0b41d7d6]MY[/b:4e0b41d7d6] way. It doesn't seem like the sort of thing that anyone can claim as their own. It's just an update schedule. And secondly, as [b:4e0b41d7d6]if[/b:4e0b41d7d6] I'd ever come after you for using any of my ideas. Feel free to use any [i:4e0b41d7d6]Goblins[/i:4e0b41d7d6] imagery or anything along those lines when you get your comic up.

[quote:4e0b41d7d6="Cuddles"]are you going to put all the submitted comics in with tthe other fan art, or are you going to make it accessable from the archime as this weeks post?

They'll be going into a fan section. I have to clean up my fan art page so it looks nicer.

Time again to answer more questions...

[quote:d3a3ecfc08="Yorath"]I know there is the list... but do Fumble's Fumbles™ have an effect on him outside of combat related skills? : As in... One moment he's whiping...WIPING his arse and the next he's somehow evoked Bloatar, 5th Load* of Corruption?

*Lord[/quote:d3a3ecfc08]

Um... ew. No, fumbles can only happen during combat. The reason being is that when performing an action during combat, you're going through some heavy duty adrenaline. Go into your back yard and try to fire an arrow at the neighbor's cat. You might hit and you might miss. But you won't trip or hit yourself in the foot, because you're calm and able to take your time. Now try to fire an arrow at that cat while a big guy named [i:d3a3ecfc08]Spikey-Necked-Death-Skull-Snake-Tattoo-Prison-Sentence [/i:d3a3ecfc08]is trying to kill you. You'll be shaking and breathing hard and your heart will be beating in your throat. It's during times like this that you'll actually poke yourself in the eye with the tip of the bow.

[i:d3a3ecfc08]Legal safety net: Good lord, do NOT try to shoot a cat or any other creature with an arrow![/i:d3a3ecfc08]

[quote:d3a3ecfc08="runs-wth-scissors"]you should write a book.[/quote:d3a3ecfc08]

Thanks. I actually have a chunk of a book written called [i:d3a3ecfc08]Fable Pendray[/i:d3a3ecfc08]. It's about a halfling paladin who is kicked out of his order, stripped of his status as a paladin and cursed by his God. My chances of having it published are now increased with the recognition I've gotten for [i:d3a3ecfc08]Goblins[/i:d3a3ecfc08], but I'd have to take a great deal of time off of the comic, and I'm really not interested in doing that. Oh, the irony is bitter-sweet!

[quote:d3a3ecfc08="runs-wth-scissors"]what level was the elf who brought the shield of wonder into the warcamp?[/quote:d3a3ecfc08]

Not a very high level. No legendary adventurer would have "Eaten by his own shield" written on his gravestone. He had to be a rookie.

I like all the hot babes and fast cars that doing this comic brings me!

Actually, I just like telling a story that makes people interested in these characters. I like making people laugh and I like making unreal things seem real.

[quote:d3a3ecfc08="Says-Nonsence"]What is YOUR favourite char?[/quote:d3a3ecfc08]

All of them. Seriously. If anyone of them were less than my favorite, I'd drop him/her out of the comic. Keep in mind, that this doesn't mean that the characters who have died were not my favorites.

Oh, and I'm well aware of the fact that I've completely destroyed the actual meaning of the word "favorite" here, so you can stop looking at me like that.

[quote:d3a3ecfc08="Xeno_Mezphy"]How would you describe the Orcs being controlled by the plant? Undead, Animated corpse, or unlife?

I figured this would be the best way to settle the debate. [/quote:d3a3ecfc08]

That's actually covered in the Fiend Folio. I did change a lot about the Yellow Muck Creeper because when I DM, I almost always change a lot about the monsters I put into the game. It keeps the players on their toes. But in this case, the orc zombies are not actually undead and they're not actually evil. Just like in the book.

Ended up getting three Doppelgangers stuck on my Rapier, which, in an attempt to maintain their sanity, they deemed, "Not a normal Rapier."[/quote:d3a3ecfc08]

Well, like any experienced gamer, I've seen a lot of amazing critical hits and fumbles. I don't think those are really exploits though. Just part of the game.

I could spend all day typing D&D stories here, but instead I'll just say that if anyone ever catches me at a convention, I'll tell you all the D&D stories you like. Exploitive and otherwise.

Those adventurers are played by the same three players who played the drow trio.

You know what? I can't even remember if I've answered this before, so don't feel bad.

I have everything written out in either point form, short paragraphs or messy notes. It's pretty strict, but I do add things or make small changes to future storylines from time to time. By the time the storyline catches up to my notes, it's so fleshed out that I don't need to make anything up as I go. So no, I don't do that.

[quote:d3a3ecfc08="Anonymous"]soo... when you are hideously popular and get, like, 100 questions a day, are you going to hire someone to pretend to be you and answer them?[/quote:d3a3ecfc08]

[quote:d3a3ecfc08="Hobbithearted"]Is the Shield of Wonder something from one of your campaigns, like Klik is?

And, is there a percentile chart that shows all the random stuff that can happen? And if so, might we ever see in included in a book? Y'know, like Fumbles' fumble chart...

Or should we, perhaps, get off our lazy bums and make one for ourselves? (Using the royal we, of course. ^^)[/quote:d3a3ecfc08]

The Shield of Wonder is based off of the Glove of wonder, which is from a previous game. The Glove of Wonder is, of course, based off of the Rod of Wonder from the text books. The Glove was great because you activated it by pointing at someone. I'd actually watch the wearer and wait for him or her to point at someone in real life during a game. It'd then roll to see if the person who was pointed at would turn into something yucky or start singing ancient, elven songs or something. The Glove was accidentally used maybe once or twice a month. Still, no one ever wanted to take it off.

I do have a random list (although I don't roll randomly for the storyline), but I don't have any plans on releasing that info, since it'd give away to much about future storylines.

You can make one yourselves, of course. That'd be cool.

[quote:d3a3ecfc08="Guesty McGuest"]Do the colors of those gem thingies on the shield have any signifigance? Or, for that matter, the colors of the casting text or the onomotomrrobotowossname word things (err.. onomatopoeia)?

I'm guess the answer is either no or rafo, so if it's rafo I'll assume the answer is actually "yes".

The colours on the shield are there to represent choas. Lots of colours, lots of possibilities (there are more possibilities than there are colours on the shield). They don't individually mean anything.

As for the colours that people have been talking about on the sword and the text, etc. that will be explained in the comic. So RAFO.

Okay, as the questions are growing in number, I'm gonna have to keep my answers kinda short or I'll be spending all my time answering them instead of drawing. So don't be offended if I give you a quick answer.

Well firstly, they're not begathons. I wouldn't say that the people who enjoy reading Tempts Fate and who enjoy the desktops are begging me for that stuff, so I don't think I'm begging for donations.

Now that that's cleared up, if Tempts dies, I'll... hmmm. I'm not sure what will happen.

[quote:c8e3d9d2dd="AlpineBob"]Elfquest was great! (They were originally published as b&w comics, btw.) I don't notice that much EQ influence artwise, but I'm not an artist. Did you mean you were influenced by her story-telling techniques?
Wormy was the best thing in those old Dragons, and I would subscribe in a second if I knew it was back, even though I would pretty much ignore the rest of the magazine. I have tried a few times to find a paper compilation of those Wormy strips, without success, so thanks for the link to his archive. However, I just went there and when I tried a few pages all I could see were those darn red x placeholders (just like that one over there in my icon slot). Did you have that problem? Is there something I can do to fix it?[/quote:c8e3d9d2dd]

Yeah, the way Wendy Pini told her story was a big influence for me. But there are some art influences as well.

The Wormy archive I linked to is old and falling apart, so a lot of the links are broken. Currently, there is only one way to legally read Wormy, and that's to be holding ancient copies of Dragon Magazine in your hand and read them from there. There are no compilations online or on paper, unfortunately.

[quote:c8e3d9d2dd="Jharviss"]I apologize if this has been asked. I've read the first half of this thread, and then I gave up hope and skipped to the end. Here is my question.

When you are writing your comic, do you do an outline, a flow-chart, or a prewriting of sorts before hand?

For example, something like this:

[b:c8e3d9d2dd]Panel 1[/b:c8e3d9d2dd]
Chief, timid - Thinking: The orcs are all dead?
Says: Ears?

[b:c8e3d9d2dd]Panel 2[/b:c8e3d9d2dd]
Dead orcs
Chief, in distance: Big Ears!

....and so on. I was reading through an X-men comic and discovered that that his how all of the writer's do their stuff, however, not all of the X-men writers actually do the drawing as well. I was just curious to know if you do.

Cheers.[/quote:c8e3d9d2dd]

I write out the story waaaaayyyy ahead of time, mostly in point form with some dialogue. Some of the more detailed points in the story are written kind of like a first draft of a novel.

Then, the week before I start that update, I scribble out the comic with a pen just so I can know where everyone will be standing and what it's all going to look like and where the text goes. In this form, the characters all look like blobby stick men.

Then I draw the actual comic, scan it in and pester TheKender until she colours it with Photoshop. After she adds all of the base colours, I go through and add metallic shines, some shading and any special effects like glowing eyes, swords, etc. Then I add all the text and sound effects.

Then I go sleep for a long time.

[quote:c8e3d9d2dd="Panther"]When theres a scene in brass moon or another populated area , can there be cameo apearances of forum members?

I think that's an awesome idea. I'll definately put out the word when the comic gets closer those moments.

[quote:c8e3d9d2dd="Outshined"]What is Magubliyet like in this setting? In traditional dnd, this deity is described as a sort of patron for Goblin expansion and conquest. (more of an evil deity). However, Goblins behave rather differently in your setting (as we well know), so is Magubliyet altered as well in terms of mentality or domains?[/quote:c8e3d9d2dd]

The God of Goblins, like all Gods, is a mystery.

For now.

[quote:c8e3d9d2dd="Azreiel"]Here's a question for ya!

If OOTS is deemed worthy of having a Winkipedia entry about it, and 8-bit and the nOOb have Winkipedia, hell even FLATWOOD has one, how come GOBLINS, which is much better then stupid Rich and his dinkey little stick men[/size:c8e3d9d2dd] all the rest doesn't have one!

Should we lobby the Winki people?[/quote:c8e3d9d2dd]

There used to be a Wikipedia thingy, but it disappeared. I'm not sure why. There's another one at http://www.answers.com/topic/goblins-webcomic

Maybe Wiki moved the entry to over here. Who knows. They mention the comic over at Wiki, but now it's only one sentence.

[quote:c8e3d9d2dd="Anonymous"]Did the Goblins have particular theme songs when you created them or am I just nuts in that whenever I see Fumbles I get Mr Tambourine Man playing in my head?[/quote:c8e3d9d2dd]

I have songs that I listen too so often while drawing the comic, that they've almost become my personal, little soundtrack for the whole thing. But [i:c8e3d9d2dd]Tambourine Man[/i:c8e3d9d2dd] isn't one of them. Great song though.

[quote:c8e3d9d2dd="Shorty311"]When're we gonna see Minmax and Forgath, Kore, and Fumbles again. I'm loving that you've brought us the Adventures of the.... Well, Goblin Adventuring Party, and we're getting to see what happens to Dies-Horribly, Bless his soul, but Fumbles is a character we haven't seen in quite some time, I'm starting to wonder if he already had his near death, returning the dolly, making things right, almost getting slain by the Goblin-Slayer or whatever happens without us even seeing a peek! And Minmax and Forgath just need another appearance, after all the action with the Goblin Adventuring Party and the ensuing action with Dies, I could use some of Minmax and Forgath's brand of Comic Relief.... And I can't wait to see more of Kore, cause he poses a huge obstacle for the Goblin Adventuring Party, and Minmax y Forgath, and Dies & Klik, and I want to see how that develops....

In other words, can we have an estimation in weeks or whatever of when we'll be seeing the rest of the cast? Or do I have to get a RAFO? And this last weeks comic answered my previous question of "The "I'm not wearing gloves chick" and her companions wouldn't be the same people who made our ill-fated Drow... Would they?" I know you did, but man, was that ever a great way to answer questions... I wish you could insert a few pages into the comic to answer all our questions... Wouldn't that be something?[/quote:c8e3d9d2dd]

All those characters will, of course, be seen again, and the storyline with Fumbles won't be glossed over. In other words, I won't suddenly pop over to Fumbles as he's returning from Brassmoon and saying "Wow, what an adventure! I'm glad that's all done though." You'll be there with him.

I can't tell you how many weeks until each character is seen though, so... RAFO.

[quote:c8e3d9d2dd="Likes-to-scrath-himself"]what do orcs taste like?[/quote:c8e3d9d2dd]

Doritos.

[quote:c8e3d9d2dd="tomaO2"]I was still a little confused about why Chief let Thaco join the warcamp but wouldn't let him fight. I get that Chief needed to tap Thaco's knowledge but Thaco could have helped in the fighting too. My best guess is that he was afraid of being upstaged but that doesn't strike me as a worry Chief would have.

I was also wondering if you could tell us a bit about how your planning to level up the characters. The higher up they get the more the story will evolve. How long will it take before they are too powerful for the stories you want to tell and such. Will the character's have to be retired then? How much time do you plan to space out each leveling?

Have you given any thought to asking Chaszmyr (assuming she was interested) to do an official subcomic that you could host on your website? She does such great work and I have seen this sort of idea successfully carried out over at the comic http://www.bobandgeorge.com/. A person submits 10 strips or so and if it's good enough the author puts it up and just has a section up to the side that mentions whenever it is updates. That could be a really neat addition you could have for your comic [/color:c8e3d9d2dd][/quote:c8e3d9d2dd]

RAFO.

Chas's comics will be getting their own spot on the site. They're too cool to lump in with other fan comics. Not that the other fan comics aren't cool too.

Yes, we will see hobgoblins and no, we have not seen any yet (at the time that I write this post).

[quote:c9e155095b="High-Chancellor"]What made you first decide to start writing Goblins?[/quote:c9e155095b]

Hmmm, I can't remember if I've answered this one before... :

I've been drawing comics all my life (not actual REAL comics that you buy in a store or read online, just the kind I draw, then show my friends). I just love telling a story in this format.

Goblins is really just a D&D webcomic done in my own style. As many people already know by now, it started out as Kobolds.

[quote:c9e155095b="High-Chancellor"]Is Dies Horribly destined to Die Horribly, or is that another RAFO?[/quote:c9e155095b]

That's a big, fat RAFO.

Mudhoney will actually be explained in the next Tempts Fate adventure. It's not mud mixed with honey.

[quote:c9e155095b="High-Chancellor"]Are you planning on writing any DM-guides for people who might want to hear what you have to say on the subject of game-mastering, or maybe on creating cool campeign settings?[/quote:c9e155095b]

I've got a few ideas for gaming aids that I'd like to create and sell online. I'd like to do a collection of stats for all the background creatures that appear in the comic as well as Thuntonian rules for clans of goblins, orcs, etc. However, I'd love to just create a module. All of this takes time though, and that's one of the things I'm lacking in.

[quote:c9e155095b="High-Chancellor"]Hmm... can humanoids and goblinoids interbreed? I've always wondered about that....[/quote:c9e155095b]

Well, I can't tell you about other realms, but in [i:c9e155095b]my[/i:c9e155095b] D&D world, this is how it works...

Different goblinoids can sometimes breed (like a goblin and a bugbear or a hobgoblin). But a successful birth is extremely rare. Goblinoids and humaniods can not breed without the aid of magic.

The rest of your questions are all RAFOs.

[quote:c9e155095b="Eats-Anything"]can you give us stats for kore's equipment?[/quote:c9e155095b]

I can't give out any character stats at this time without giving away more info than I'd care to. But that info will one day be made public. Just not anytime soon.

I've seen some readers creating their own stats for various characters for others to use and I have no problem with this, since no one creating these character sheets has any inside information.

[quote:c9e155095b="SVK's EVIL TWIN"]is forgath gay?[/quote:c9e155095b]

This question has actually been emailed to me a handful of times over the past months. No. Forgath is not gay. He likes the dwarven ladies.

[quote:c9e155095b="Hobbithearted"]How far ahead did you know you were going to write the "Dibs on his gauntlent!" gag in this comic? I mean, did you just realize one day "Hey, I could do this again!" or were you planning to spoof the first joke of the comic for awhile?

For that matter... We know you do plot and stuff considerably ahead of time, but what about the jokes and gags? Are they mostly thought up before hand, or are they mostly thought up shortly before/during/aroundthetimeof drawing the comic? Or a combination? Or...?[/quote:c9e155095b]

Well, for a loooong time, that gag was going to be redone during the scene in Book 1 when Minmax was running away from Complains. Minmax was going to stop by the tree and think "I think I lost him". Then Complains was just going to jump out of a tree and the two of them would fall into the statue area. I realised that it'd work much better if I saved it for the scene with DH, since I knew that they'd be talking about his "gauntlet".

Some of the one liners are written pretty close to the drawing stage. While others end up being written down many months before I get to that part of the story.

I find that writing gags and jokes for a webcomic is tougher than telling jokes on stage during a stand up routine because I can't tell how much each gag is liked or disliked. I'm not there watching you read it, so I don't know if you're laughing your ass off or rolling your eyes in discust. But on stage, if a joke is lame, I'd know it immediately (and start sweating).

All I have to go by, are what gags people are talking about online or emailing me about. It makes writing future jokes harder. Usually, all I can do is write stuff that I find funny and hope that others agree with me.

[quote:c9e155095b="Eats-Anything"]Is ride the lightning by metallica on your track i hear that whenever i think of complains. :[/quote:c9e155095b]

That's not one of the ones I listen to. For some reason, that one never [i:c9e155095b]spoke[/i:c9e155095b] to me.

[quote:c9e155095b="Guest"]Well, here's a question. Did Forgath ever heal himself up in the battle at the warcamp, just we never saw it? Because looking back, he took 4 hits from Y&B, 1 from Thac0's sword, and then another from Thac0's sword, and one from Big Ears and from Chief. It's just weird, because as a cleric, he's got 8 base HP. Suppose the maximum, 20 Constitution, and let's say he took Toughness, that's 14 HP. And even if Y&B rolled a 1 on her damage rolls, she still gets +1 from Magic Weapon, so that's 8 damage already (unless she had a negative Strength modifier, that is).[/quote:c9e155095b]

Good eye. When I was DMing, I often described monsters pounding on the characters more than once even though the beast had rolled a single hit. For example...

[i:c9e155095b]DM: The orc raises his rusty blade above his head and screams some sort of warcry before running toward you, Lame Ass the Fighter.

Lame: I raise my shield to try and block his attack.

DM: The orc swings his weapon and it bounces off of your shield with a loud clang[/i:c9e155095b]. The force of his blow runs through the shield and you can feel your elbow moan with pain. Your attacker spins his blade in a practiced motion and swings again, this time he strikes lower than the shield and you feel the familiar, white hot pain of a dull, chipped blade cutting into your leg. Before blood can even escape from the wound, the orc's sword pokes you in the shoulder, sending a jolt of agony down your sword arm. You can now taste blood from the split lip you recieved a few rounds ago and adrenaline is causing your heart to beat furiously with a pounding mixture of rage and fear.

However, if we look at the game mechanics of what just happened, the orc rolled a successful hit and did 4 points of damage. That's it. As long as my players knew that the orc's multiple hits were nothing but flavour text, they didn't mind, because 4 points of damage is 4 points of damage. Plus, they knew that they could also describe certain attacks in the same manner. Of course, this method of describing a hit is only possible in certain situations.

But there you have it. Some of those hits were counted by me as one hit. However, in going through my old notes, Forgath was spent as far as hit points were concerned.

Sorry for taking so long to answer these. Let's see how many I can kill off right now...

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Hobbithearted"]Will the Tempt's Fate donation side-comic thingie be included in Book One, when its put on paper?[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

No. I may, one day release a TF compilation or something, but who knows.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Bluephoenix"]For when you return: How was your vacation? [/quote:a2dd1155c7]

Oh, you mean my camping trip many moons ago. I loved it. I woke up early one morning, grabbed a folding chair, a can of pop (that's soda for you crazy Americans), my sketchbook, and I walked out into the thick of the woods. I spent a good hour or so sketching the area.
My kids loved it, my friends loved it and nothing terrible happened.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Panther"]did you use the katana?[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

Yes. It was swung around during the day to combat invisible monsters and clung to during the night to keep the Blair Witch away. My kids and I also went adventuring and it was used then in a few battles. Dixon got stuck in a magical trap designed to keep elves away from the area. Damn orcish shamans

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Eternitywarrior"]Ok serious questions this time... I swear...

Sorry.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Eternitywarrior"]How do you keep from throwing spoilers left and right (one of my weaknesses as a storyteller) [/quote:a2dd1155c7]

Sometimes it's tough. There are parts of the story that I can't wait to get to and I want to start talking about them. But almost constant DMing for 25 years has taught me a lot about how to hang onto story secrets.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Zeigfreid"]Hi

Question!

Are you going to click on this link and learn how to let your readers create a searchable database of your entire comic, so that they never have to go digging through pages of Goblins to find that one line they were wondering about?

There are currently 517 websites transcribed into Oh No Robot's searchable master database. Whose webcomic will be next?

You might also want more RSSpect, but that's a little iffyer.[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

No thanks.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="TinSoldier"]How many strips will there be in Book Two? I just checked the archive and I noticed there were 33 strips in Book One. As of writing this post, there were twenty-eight strips in Book Two. So that leaves five more to go.

One of the reasons that I am wondering is because Goblin Slayer and Serpent Girl really haven't been introduced yet even though they are the logo for Book Two.[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

Actually, I was going over the storyline not too long ago and I realized that the section of the plot that I'd decided was Book 2 is entirely too big. You see, even though I have the story written out, I don't sketch it out into comic form until I reach that part of the story each week. So I never really know how many pages it's going to take to tell the story until the comic catches up with my writings. Now that I'm further down the storyline, I can see that ending Book 2 where I'd planned to all those months ago would make it roughly three times the size of Book 1. I don't mind having Book 2 be bigger than Book 1, but that's a little bit too much. So I'm ending Book 2 earlier than I'd planned and starting Book 3 earlier. For those who are reading the webcomic, this doesn't really make much difference to you at all. I mean, the comic will still chug along whether it's called Book 1, 2, or 143. However, this makes the logo a little strange. Capt. Goblinslayer and his mysterious, green haired companion will still be introduced in Book 2, but they're gonna pull a bit of a Darth Maul. Meaning that they won't be in Book 2 as much as the logo suggests. This is a mistake on my part and I hope that I don't get too many "WTF" emails as a result. So to sum up, Book 2 will be quite a bit bigger than Book 1, but it won't be the paper titan it would be if I stuck to my original plan. The Book 3 logo on the site will definately feature someone who'll be around much sooner. I've learned my lesson.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="CloisteredCleric"]Those two bubbles in here... what do they say. (now that it is a couple months later)[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

They would still be considered spoilers at this time, so I can't say.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Messenger"]From the The White Terror update:
[quote:a2dd1155c7]"... instead of the typical thirty years that most goblins live."[/quote:a2dd1155c7]
Is this the natural lifespan of Thuntonian goblins? If not, is this figure due to death from adventurers? What is the maximum lifespan a goblin can have if he doesn't ever bite it from battling PC's?

Thank you.[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

I can't even remember if I read this in a D&D text or if it's a Thuntonian house rule (a lot of my house rules are like that, I can't remember if I made them up or if it's an actual rule), but my goblins have a natural lifespan of 30 years. Which means that 5 - 8 years is comparable to our teen years, 9 - 15 is adult and after that you start to get into "elder" years.
I really like the fact that goblins have such a short lifespan. In almost every fantasy story about fictional races, the creatures involved live a great deal longer than humans (elves, dwarves, vampires, etc). We don't see a lot of it the other way around.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Azreiel"]Thut,

Thekender is, of course, cool with it. As for the "dig past" question... um... colour me dense, but I'm not sure what you mean. Sorry.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Mr. 'Wong'"]Now that the goblins are PC's, if they die, will they come back as new (spontainioulsy generated?) PC's? If so, will they always be goblins?.. With meta-memories?[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

Nope. That "when I scratch an itch" gag is as close to [i:a2dd1155c7]that kind[/i:a2dd1155c7] of joke as I'd ever like to get.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Dragonsatemydog"]When did the comic really take off ?[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

That depends on what you consider "take off" to mean. If you define that term to me, I promise to answer it.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Chaszmyr"]How tall are the goblins? Are they by the book height-wise (between about 3' and 3' 6" or a little more variable than that?[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

For the most part, I stick to the Monster Manual in that regard.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="Trumps"]Hey, so I heard you intentionally blurred what the elves in the bacground were saying in this comic http://thunt.comicgen.com/d/20060415.html and so, no one will ever know what they say, except for you of course. But its been nagging at me, and I was wondering if you could tell us what they say? please [/quote:a2dd1155c7]

See above.

[quote:a2dd1155c7="TinSoldier"]I know that Goblins, Tempts-Fate, dealing blackjack, kids, and TheKender take up all of your time, but are you going to post more non-goblins art on your web page? Some of those drawings are awesome and I would like to see more.

Did you ever get the dragon I emailed you back? That should go in there for sure.[/quote:a2dd1155c7]

It's definately hard to find the time to draw non-goblin art. I'm not sure when I'll get to do it. Maybe I can cheat a bit and create a few non-goblin desktops. This way it's part of the comic so I'm not wasting time.

I got the Dragon, thank you. I'll post it eventually. I'm so behind with that sort of thing.

Okay, so there are a few of the questions out of the way. Back to work now.

Alright, this is so overdue that I'm sure a lot of the questions in here are now grossly out of date, but here goes...

Quote:
Lonestarnorth writes... Do you get annoyed at all the exposition that you have to include to explain various plot points? When I write and find myself detailing pages and pages of background rather than driving the story forward, I get really fed up with the whole thing and consider just leaving readers in the dark while I continue with the important stuff. It can be argued that background is the only real way to move forward, but I was just curious about how you feel when writing a comic like The White Terror with an entire page or more of mostly text.

I get some criticism about my exposition at times and I can certainly see why. To me, it's almost like fast forwarding through a part of the story and if I were writing a novel, then I wouldn't be using it as often as I do. It's just that the medium of webcomics is so painfully slow that I have a choice of either using some quick exposition or spending 10 to 30 extra pages following that "show it, don't tell it" rule. I guess I'm a little annoyed that I can't spend the time creating a long flashback or something instead of using the exposition. But in the end, it's just a tool that I've chosen to use.

Quote:
Snotling writes... I must now ask about a great mystery I've come upon: I ask thee, Thunt: How can you take days off of your dayjob at high frequency in Tempts Fate's adventures, without getting fired?

In the past, my job has been very schedule friendly. Meaning that I could set how many hours of work I'd like to do for the next month or three. After making such a request, my schedule would be altered accordingly.

Quote:
Snotling writes... Tempts Fate is developing his own adventuring party. He has two followers:

1: Plank

2: Blonde Naked Mud-honey covered Babe.

Does this mean that future comics in that series will have goals could include keeping Tempt's friends alive?

Unlike the main comic, I make up Tempts as I go (and so do the donations). I really have little to no idea what the future holds for him and his pals.

Quote:
Snotling writes... Why does mudhoney cling to the breasts?

Because my kids watch me draw. Because Paypal won't let me use their services if I include porn/nudity in my comic. Because that mudhoney strip was about as close to NSFW as I'd like to get.

Quote:
Bluephoenix writes... Is Chief gay?

Isn't his sexual orientation obvious?

Quote:
Snotling writes... How come Ears' ears are tied up above his head in this comic?

Because otherwise, they flop around in front of his eyes and get in the way.

Quote:
High-Chancellor writes... do you ever get annoyed at the extra-thread drift and commentary that pops up in here, or do you even check it anymore?

Also...

Is Big-Ears going to have a wicked-awesome mount, or what?

Aaaand...

Vaguely, how lenient are you regarding house rules when you've made your character sheets? I'm imagining fairly, given Thac0's choice of Agile for the bonus feat.

I don't get annoyed by people asking about or commenting on the comic, no. And I don't check this thread often, but I'd like to eventually catch up with it.

As for Ears' mount, RAFO.

Over the years, our game has built up a lot of house rules and many of them are in Goblins.

Quote:
Tinsoldier writes... [quote:042e1ab834="Thunt"] Oh, you mean my camping trip many moons ago. I loved it. I woke up early one morning, grabbed a folding chair, a can of pop (that's soda for you crazy Americans), my sketchbook, and I walked out into the thick of the woods. So did that awesome poster and desktop come from your sketch?

Yes and no. Camping and hanging out in the woods as often as I do certainly inspires my drawings, but I didn't directly take anything from that sketch.

Quote:
Says-Nonsence writes... THe viper clan is currently making a tunnel to get past the entrance. Is this a serious design flaw of the dungeons creator or does a little suprises (like a magicall shield or something) lies ready?

I mean, you don't make such huge gate just for someone to create a tunnel and ignore the hardship of gaining the key..

Actually, this is something that's happened to me more than once in my earlier years of DMing. I once had a party hire a mining crew to dig around a dungeon entrance. Since I hadn't planned on that happening and therefore hadn't set up any real defence against it (I hate suddenly deciding "oh... uh... you can't dig through there because the rock is, well... magic.") I let it happen. The Viper's plan is simply a reflection of my personal experience. Also, many mighty gateways throughout history have been dug around or avoided.

Quote:
Chaszmyr writes... Are Kyriel and Dixon your boys?

Yes, Kyriel and Dixon are my sons and they are also two goblins in the comic. Both of my boys designed the clothing and even scars for each of their goblin counterparts.

Quote:
jbrecken writes... 'Fox has such cute toenails. Was TheKolourist tempted to put polish on them?

Naw, toenail polish is rarely her style (both Fox and Danielle).

Quote:
Velead writes... Now seriously, how'd you get to be so awesome?

ops: ops:

Okay, that's all the questions I can answer for now. Talk to you soon.
