Ya gotta get off this hangup that equates all good martial artists with monks.

Samurai are martial artists and they are not monks. They are Fighter and Paladin analogues in the Oriental Adventures. Ninjas are martial artists and THEY are NOT monks! they are Thieves and Spies! (aka Rogues)

Daredevil was trained in the Ninjitsu arts of The Hand Ninja/Assassin clan, not Monks! His Master "Stick" is not a monk!

Like I said before, a good staff is as much a weapon as a rogue's tool of the trade, in very much the same way as a dagger, just often overlooked.

A staff is an excellent probe for trapfinding
A staff can be carried openly and in-hand as a readied weapon without anyone looking twice (UNLESS you wear mage robes!!!), unlike a sword or dagger (all the hobbits had sturdy walking sticks before they got the daggers from the barrow wights)
A staff can be used as a crossmember for climbing down from cliffs, roofs or windows
A staff can be used with a hook for pickpocketing and item retrieval
A staff can conceal thieves tools
a hollow staff can be used for underwater infiltration, and can double as a blowgun
A staff can be used to improve the balance check for tightrope walking
...I really can keep going here....

True story direct from the game table: Needed to get to the center of the ceiling of a room. Set the staff on end (unsupported) and made a climb check to climb the pole, made another climb check to secure handholds on the ceiling, and a third check to draw the staff up to the ceiling with me. (AD&D, Thief's Climb Walls %, with all appropriate modifiers)

You make good points, and again, I'm not saying that those classes can't, I'm just saying that it doesn't tend to fit the popular image.

Or the kid from Home Alone, whose name I can't spell.

Also, since when, CorrTerrek, is the popular image of any concern to Thunt and his wild stories?

Of all my various dnd characters. 4 of my 5 theives used staves. one of them was VERY proficient with staves, and was also an acrobat type. my other theif was a thrown weapons specialist (circus folk). staves are exceptionally useful to rouge characters. most of my bard types also had at least a basic proficiency as well

'Kay, starting to feel a little bit ganged up on here. I didn't realize my views on the subject were apparently just plain wrong.

Also, if you'd read my post, you'd see that I said it probably wouldn't matter. My post pointed out that she was using a weapon popularly associated with monks and arcane spellcasters (look at the illustrations in the Player's Handbook!) and I wondered why those possibilities were apparently being ignored. I even asked if I was missing something!

I also pointed out that there were other characters who didn't use the "popular" weapons for their class (Chief and Thac0) and therefore that Saves using a staff probably meant nothing. Of course, this would be the part of my post people are ignoring.

...But if she turns out to be either a spellcaster or a monk, I want a cookie.

All that aside, I agree Saves is probably a rogue. I wouldn't discount fighter or barbarian, though. Monk is unlikely, since she seems chaotic, as is paladin. Spellcasters are squishy, and Saves doesn't seem to be, though aren't sorcerors more durable than wizards? Do bards have to have some sort of musical talent? If so, she hasn't displayed one yet.

Also, surely Duv's people would have something a rogue could wear without penalties, wouldn't they? It just seems odd that she didn't really take any armor, aside from what she's wearing on her legs. Granted, Grem's not wearing any armor either, but he was a last minute addition. Even K'sellis took a bit of armor. What's up with that?

We've already seen that K'seliss is not stupid. He knew he was going to enter a dangerous dungeon, so wearing armor was simply a logical thing to do. That one piece of armor was probably the only thing the Vipers had that actually fits on him.

Well, I meant "What's up with big bad K'seliss wearing armor and Saves not?" Shoulda phrased it more clearly. Anyway, I'm wondering if Saves' relative lack of armor means anything.

If you noticed, none of the GAP wears armour, or at least not when they became adventurers, except for Complains' shield. Now the shield is gone, and BE has a kickass magical armour, but none of the others. And if you look at the Chorgak vs. Viper battle, very few of either of them wears armour, and if they do, then it's mostly shields. And there is Minmax, the fighter. It seems that Thunt doesn't always stick to usual gaming stereotypes. Maybe goblinoids don't like wearing armour in this world, and Minmax simply looks cool half-naked.

Now who wears armour? There are the BMC guards, along with GS, who wears a studded leather fittingly for his class. And there is Forgath and Kore. They are dwarves.

My point was that Saves, Dies and K'seliss were apparently given a choice. The GAP is scrounging for stuff as they go along, they haven't exactly been able to visit an armory. But Saves' group seems to have been allowed to pick what they wanted, if Dies overabundance of armor is any indication. And that raises the question, why didn't Saves take more armor? Personal choice? A class hindrance? Or maybe they simply didn't have anything her size?

I'm gonna go with a combination of Class Hinderance flavoured by the fact that good durable leathers are staple mine garb (good for the spelunking). Supple enough to allow freedom of movement, sleek enough to not interfere with her professed assignment as a "squeezer" and protective enough to stand up to the isolated conditions.

Adding the vambraces/greaves simply upgraded her from prison/work wear to light armor.

Note also that the GAP has another armor-wearer.... Senor Vorpal!!!
