Consumer Guide

COINAGE

There are two types of currency used in Nippon, the koku, and rice; plain and simple rice. Rice may be used as currency (to the right people as a samurai is hardly going to accept a bag of rice to a bag of moneys) and can be used to buy most mundane items, such as blankets, poor to average quality clothes. Naturally paying for something with rice will involve some bartering, i.e. if a bag of rice weighs heavy then it might be worth an average quality set of clothes.

Basically, 30 koku (or Ku) equals 1 Imperial Gold Crown, so 1Ku is not worth much as there no equivalents to brass pennies or silver shillings; everything is handled in the koku. Koku coinage comes in various shapes and sizes, some coins have a square hole punched through its centre, while others have triangles or circles. There are 50Ku pieces (these have the square hole punched through the coin's centre), 20Ku pieces (these have triangular centres), 10Ku pieces (these have circular centres), and 1Ku pieces (these are plain round coins).

Below are just some of the items included in a Nippon consumer guide. The more mundane items, such as candles and books etc., have been excluded for the time being. If costs are needed then multiply the cost by 30 per GC or by 2 per silver shilling.
